FAQs

Is A Thousand Hills accredited by the state of NC?

No, we are not an accredited school. Our tutors may or may not have teaching certificates, although each tutor is thoroughly trained through our program.

Do I have to volunteer?

All families must be a part of one of our four committees and at least one parent must attend meetings and be an active member by giving input and helping with projects. These meetings will most likely be once a month and mostly by phone or zoom.

What is my role in my child's education as a parent at A Thousand Hills?
What does homework look like on days our students are not at A Thousand Hills for tutoring?

Our tutors will assign homework that must be completed and turned in at specific times. This may be math problems, writing assignments, a specific project, memory work, reading, etc... Our tutors will not be sending home lessons to be taught by parents. Parents can and are encouraged to supplement curriculum and education at home with their students on days they are not being tutored.

What days do you meet and are you a drop off program?

We meet Monday - Wednesday from 8:35 - 2:35. We are a drop off program.

What is A Thousand Hills House System?

Our House System places students into small, mixed-age groups for the year to foster community, leadership, and teamwork through projects, service, and group activities.

Parents remain responsible for their child’s homeschool education and legal requirements. You must file a notice of intent to operate a homeschool (we are happy to walk you through this process), and you must maintain your attendance and immunization records. You are also responsible for your students curriculum and learning on the days that they are not in program with A Thousand Hills.

How are grades, report cards, and assessments handled?

Each student will receive two graded assessments during the academic year - one in the middle of the year and one at the end of the year. Students in 1st - 8th grade will receive graded work for Math and English. Students will also receive a graded assessment for each Unit Study project and one end of the year graded assessment for their combined Unit Study projects.

What is the students to tutor ratio at A Thousand Hills?

Each program is different. Our Little Explorer program will be 6 students per tutor. Our 1st - 8th grade program will be 8 students per tutor. We are only accepting 8 students in our Leadership program.
